Bassonist Mathis Stier is a musician likewise at home in established as well as unknown paths, in a variety of formations he plays a repertoire from early music until contemporary and improvisation. In 2022 he presented music of the 18th century in his debut album Sentiment at Alpha classics.

After having been awarded prizes as the second prize and audience award at the ARD International Music Competition he played at the Beethovenfest Bonn, in the Kölner Philharmonie as well as the chamber halls of Konzerthaus Berlin and the Elbphilharmonie, with ensembles as the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble reflektor, the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

As a chamber musician Mathis played with the Goldmund Quartet, the Franz Ensemble and the Carousel Ensemble, he was invited to chamber music festivals in France and Spain and plays frequently concerts with the accordionist Julius Schepansky.

As an orchestra musician Mathis played with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, since 2016 he is solo bassoonist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne.
